When Did World War 1 Start - World War 1 Information

On June 28, 1914 the archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were assassinated by the Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip, during their visit to Sarajevo, Bosnia.

After the Austro-Hungarian ultimatum of 23 July 1914, which Serbia refused, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia on 28 July 1914.
Due its close relations with Serbia, Russia declared war to Austria-Hungary and the same applied for the alliance between Austria-Hungary and Germany.
On August 1, Germany declared war on Russia, and on August 3 to France.

 After the German invasion of Belgium, The United Kingdom declared war to Germany on August 6.
Due to inner problems in Russia, on March 15 1917 the Russian Tsar Nicholas II abdicates.
On 7th November 1917 the Bolsheviks overthrow the government and on March 3th 1918 Russia signs peace treaty with the Central Powers.
The United States remained neutral until April 6 1917, when war on Germany was declared.
On November 9, 1918 the German Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicates and flees Germany.
On November 11, 1918 - Germany signs the armistice at Compiegne, France (Also known as the Armistice of Compiègne).
Fighting ends on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month (i.e. 11 a.m. on November 11).
On June 28, 1919 with the “Treaty of Versailles” the World War 1 is officially ended.
